The Water and Climate Coalition and HydroSOS at AGU21

Objectives

Every year, the AGU Fall meeting convenes over 25,000 attendees from over 100 countries to share research and network. It focuses on understanding and preserving our planet and environment and also celebrates positive individual and collective outcomes of research. The theme of #AGU21 is “Science and Society.” 

At AGU21, the Water and Climate Coalition will present why water action is the best answer to climate change and on how the research community can engage with the Coalition. Furthermore, results of the pilot phase of the Hydrological Status and Outlook System – HydroSOS (a WMO led contribution to the Water and Climate Coalition) will be presented during several events at AGU21.

As a part of the WMO Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS) initiative, Guidance on Seasonal Hydrological Predictions has been developed to assist with a greater understanding of the strengths and limitations of different hydrological outlook methods, and of the causes of contrasting performance among them. There is an immediate need to develop accurate and reliable global hydrological forecasts in light of the future vulnerability to hydrological hazards and water scarcity under a changing climate. As a part of the WMO Global Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS) initiative, we investigated different approaches for blending multi-model streamflow forecasts, for developing holistic operational forecasts.
